I had another fantastic musical assignment this week at the Royal Academy of Music in London. The Laurence Hobgood Quartet were in town with singer supremo Kurt Elling for his set at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s club before heading out on a whistle stop European tour.
Pianist, composer and arranger Laurence has collaborated with Kurt since the mid 1990s. During that time he has refined a superb quartet with Ulysses Owens Jr on drums, John McLean on guitar and Harish Raghavan on bass.
Nadine who heads Serious’ Learning & Participation programme, arranged for the Quartet to be involved in a day’s masterclass with 30 select jazz musicians from the Academy. Their collective musicianship was very powerful indeed and the near one-to-one tuition paid dividends to the budding expertise rising through the Academy’s jazz fraternity.
