With winter drawing in across the northern hemisphere, I thought it fun to punch some colour into the increasingly grey days and show the powerful combination of a Phase One IQ250 medium format digital system with a pair of Profoto B1 lights.
This leaping moment was captured mid-afternoon on a blazingly hot day in July this year, during a 2 week assignment producing fresh promotional images for Visit Geilo AS in Norway. This particular day featured 2 models ascending the newly renovated Prestholt stairs that connect the Prestholtseter with the far higher & wildly majestic Hallingskarvet mountain plateau. Starting in early morning light, we role-played various outdoor activities featuring different clothing and equipment set against the wide vistas of the stunning Hol Kommune landscape.
The assignment was my first using my newly purchased Phase One IQ250 system, complete with a 80mm F2.8 Schneider Kreuznach Leaf Shutter lens and during our day on the mountain I discovered Tone's party trick of jumping pretty damn high without any run up. So we found a great spot to show off the landscape with the Prestholt stairs' mini summit. We set-up the lights, dropped in a 0.6ND grad to add a little drama to the clouds (that were getting darker as we prepared) pre-focused and nailed her jump on the 3rd frame.
The 1/1000th sec capture was possible due to the high sync speed of the leaf shutter lenses (can shoot up to 1/1600th sec) and Profoto's Air Remote (quick note: normally brilliant Pocket Wizards run out of breath around 1/400th sec).
Is the Phase One system any good? does a bear shit in the woods!
I've used the IQ250 set-up intensely on numerous commercial assignments since late June and it delivers outstanding results without breaking sweat, ever. You can throw absolutely any lighting combination at it - from just nicely metered natural light through to a host of lights, modifiers and reflectors. It produces a sublime image every time, without fail or hesitation, and the Capture One software teases out the most incredible colour accuracy from the 16bit / truly lossless RAW files.
All the photographs found in my emileholba.co.uk/recent-work gallery are shot exclusively on Phase One. All are full frame and have not been rinsed or 'rescued' through Photoshop. If you're viewing on a large desktop display - look for the '+' symbol in the top right corner of any image to view full screen.
Aside from a lottery scratch card win, buying into a new system such as Phase One is not a decision taken lightly and requires a little leap of faith - so please do not bother wasting time trawling the internet, just pick up the phone and ask to speak to Steve Martin at Teamwork Digital in London. Teamwork's customer service is exemplary, refreshingly honest and not tied up with or distracted by the endless weekly changes of the prosumer camera market. The team are interested in long term relationships and will take time to understand your creative & business needs.
And NO - I have no tie with Teamwork, Phase One or Profoto. I merely want to shout out about great service in this myopic age of Black Fridays, Cyber Mondays and 'Returns' Tuesdays...
More from me about working with the IQ250 in future posts.
