Here you will find behind the scenes snippets, vigenttes and occasional deep dive into my projects and commissions.

For over two decades, Ceramic Art London (CAL) has been a platform for the world’s finest ceramicists to showcase their latest creations. Emerging from their phyllosilicate-infused studios, these artists meet pottery enthusiasts, connect with collectors and galleries, and socialise with fellow clay manipulators. Their friendly and genteel spirit is delightfully infectious, and one is in awe of the imagination, skill, and tooled precision on display.

Commissioned by the organiser, the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain (CPA), I was asked to document the event. I captured a mix of the Private View opening night, attended by invited collectors, and the first day of public attendance. With over 120 exhibitors on show in one of London’s oldest exhibition spaces, Olympia, 5,000 visitors from over 30 countries got a chance to see an extraordinary range of craftsmanship. Ceramic artists utilised an array of techniques, colours, finishes, and intricate details.

It was fascinating to learn about the various methods used to create the myriad of sculptures, tableware, figurines (human, deity, animal), and fine art on display. Beyond simple hand-forming or wheel-throwing, I discovered techniques such as coil pottery, slab building, slip casting, jiggering, jollying, and ram pressing. Combining essential firing stages, bisque and glaze, with different protective and decorative finishes, it was incredible to think so many forms were created from a single key material: clay.

Of course, the ideal way to photograph a ceramic artist’s work is in a studio environment with controlled lighting. This allows you to faithfully illustrate the artist’s refined use of colour and desired textural effect. Temporary exhibition stands and spaces don’t conform to this standard, so I looked for personable moments, juxtapositions of shape and colour, and vignettes that best represented the spirit of Ceramic Art London 2025.

I want to express my gratitude to Simon Harrison and Fiona Booy for the commission. It was a pleasure working with your team at the Craft Potters Association and Ceramic Review. I also want to thank all the ceramicists for allowing me to photograph their work – just wow.

An extra special thank you goes to Suzie Curtis, Creative Event Producer extraordinaire, for the recommendation. It was a lot of fun!
